Beamer Spotlight: N. James
In our latest Beamer Spotlight, we hear from ‘N.James’, a CKD patient who’s using the Kidney Beam Transplant Programme to get moving again following her kidney transplant. Previously very active, and a lover of all things outdoors, ‘N’ has been able to slowly increase her strength and stamina in a safe way, as well as benefit from education sessions on healthy eating and nutrition.
Firstly, tell us a bit about yourself and your kidneys
I am a 6-month kidney transplant patient. Prior to my diagnosis, I was a fit and outgoing person with an enthusiastic outlook until my CKD progressed into stage 5 and I ended up on dialysis. I’m forever grateful to a deceased donor for a priceless gift of a kidney, which gave me a second chance.
Regardless of ups and downs, I am keen to restore my fitness level as well as to maintain my mental health. Kidney Beam has become my essential companion in this endeavour, and I’m thankful for their help, support, and knowledge.
How do you feel in general about physical activity and movement?
I have always loved the outdoors: hiking and downhill skiing have been my permanent activities for over 30 years. I also developed a serious interest in ashtanga and yin yoga. I strongly believe any physical activities you love are compulsory to lead a meaningful and fulfilling life, it supports us on physical, mental, and spiritual levels, providing us with energy and motivation.
Why did you decide to try Kidney Beam?
Originally, I received information on Kidney Beam from my renal team, but I didn’t join Kidney Beam until hearing the excellent reviews from other CKD patients on a Patient Forum. By that time, I realised I needed specialised help on how to continue my rehabilitation journey effectively.
How has Beam helped you in getting active?
Before surgery, I viewed myself as active and somewhat knowledgeable in physical and psychological fields - I am a yoga instructor with a special interest in Jung’s analytical psychology - however, after surgery, I simply was terrified to start any exercises due to anxiety of injuring my new kidney.
“The Kidney Transplant Programme” was an excellent and relaxed way to start; it equipped me with basic but essential tools for my rehabilitation journey, such as healthy eating, understanding of cravings, simple but effective exercises, etc.
Most importantly, I came across some inspiring people, who provided me with a positive outlook, as well as an example of personal achievements (for example. British Transplant Games champions).
What are your favourite things about Kidney Beam?
It is designed by qualified and trained specialists, who are interested in helping renal patients, in particular, dialysis or transplant patients. For me, they speak a language understood by us, renal patients. It provides me the comfort of being listened to and understood.
Also, Kidney Beam supports a wide class range, covering some simple physical activities to meditation and yoga. As a patient, I could find a most suitable program for me now, or I may be inspired to try a completely new activity (like ballet fitness).
Anything else you'd like to share?
Kidney Beam has been so supportive and valuable for me to hear other people’s experiences. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone involved and to wish all the best to each patient!
