Member Spotlight: Annie G
Kidney Beamer Annie’s kidneys had been gently failing over a few years, the result of diabetes, high blood pressure and being overweight. Having always been a keen gardener, this kept her active in the summer months, but she was aware that during the winter, her activity decreased “the cold and long evenings always turned me into a couch potato!” and that’s where Kidney Beam comes in handy.
Tell us about your experience on Kidney Beam
I was given information by the London urology team when I was diagnosed with stage five kidney disease. I was feeling very worried, and frightened, at a loss I knew I had to change my diet drastically and also to try and get a bit fitter. I felt overwhelmed by it all.
I went onto the kidney beam web site, set up an account, and the next day I received an email encouraging me to give things a try. What knocked me out and made me feel so much better was that someone had responded so quickly and helpfully, it felt like Kidney Beam would be on my side and helpful.
I floundered around for a few weeks feeling a bit depressed and overwhelmed, and at that point, it was wonderful to be contacted by the health coach Herolin. She helped me to sort out the internet, sent me a link to a manageable activity programme, and helped me with weekly phone calls. For the first time I got on with the exercises and could talk to someone who listened and gave advice when I needed it. She helped me to develop a routine and feel confident in trying the different programmes - Brilliant!
Since starting Kidney Beam, I feel more energised, more in control and a bit more hopeful. I have enjoyed moving more and it feels more purposeful.
