Paul’s Story: Improving Health & Wellbeing With Kidney Beam
Paul’s journey with kidney disease began many years ago. In 1986, he was diagnosed with glomerulonephritis, a condition that affects the kidneys’ ability to function properly. Just two years later, in 1988, Paul began haemodialysis, a treatment that would become part of his life for several years.
In 1993, Paul received his first kidney transplant. Remarkably, the transplant lasted for 22 years, however, in 2015, his transplanted kidney began to fail, and Paul returned to dialysis. Today, he is waiting for his second transplant.
Though he neither loves nor hates exercise, Paul admits to often struggling with motivation. However, when Paul heard about the Kidney Beam programme through his dialysis unit, he saw it as an opportunity to introduce regular, structured exercise into his routine. He was recommended to try one of the Kidney Beam 12-week programmes tailored to his current health and fitness levels.
The impact was significant. Paul noticed a clear improvement in his overall health and wellbeing, as well as his fitness. The online format made the programme easy to follow and accessible, and the exercises felt manageable rather than overwhelming. Knowing the routines were designed specifically with kidney patients in mind gave him confidence to stick with it.
As his fitness improved and his energy levels increased, Paul found himself becoming more active in everyday life. Simple activities, like going for walks, became easier.
One of Paul’s favourite aspects of Kidney Beam is the on demand sessions. Following along with the videos, he found the instructors to be clear and encouraging, making classes not only informative but fun, helping him stay engaged and committed.
With the help of Kidney Beam and our health coaching programme, Paul has reconnected with movement, built confidence in his abilities, and rediscovered the positive impact that regular activity can have on both physical and mental wellbeing.
