Why we’re here

Meet Murdula

Mrudula is a 78 yr old lady with CKD. She is approaching end stage where she will need to commence dialysis treatment or have a kidney transplant.

Mrudula reports that she is struggling with her walking and getting up and down stairs, and feels anxious and worried about how she is going to cope.

If Mrudula had a cardiac, pulmonary, or even cancer diagnosis, she would get routine access to specialist rehabilitation at a local hospital.

But, because there are very few units that offer kidney-specific rehab, she isn’t able to access the care she desperately needs to stay independent and have a good quality of life.

We created the Kidney Beam app to deliver evidence-based, tailored physical therapy and lifestyle support for all people living with CKD, just like Mrudula.

Cost-effective platform that saves money & delivers return-on-investment

The average impact of 12 weeks on the Kidney Beam intervention is a reduction of £580 per patient, across in-patient days, out-patient attendances, A&E admissions, social care, primary care, and medication costs.

How does Kidney Beam help patients?

Around 1 in 10 adults in the UK have kidney disease, with prevalence rising due to an increase in risk factors such as obesity and diabetes.

Kidney Beam offers a digital-first provision of kidney-specific therapy targeted at individuals at different stages of CKD. Designed with patients at every stage of development, our solution:

  • Improves mental health and physical function

  • Increases ability to self-manage care

  • Tackles symptoms of fatigue, anxiety & depression

  • Provides social engagement and reduces isolation

Why commission Kidney Beam?

The NHS spends £6.4 billion of its budget on kidney care, with the mean annual cost-per-patient ranging from around £5k - £7k.

With prevalence rising, and a critical shortage of kidney-specific rehab currently provided, Kidney Beam offers an opportunity to make a real difference to health providers and patients.

  • Adhere with anticipated NHSE Standards of Care for Renal Services and Renal Service Transformation Programme toolkit for commissioning

  • Optimise resources and drive cost savings, reducing and preventing demand on services

  • Offer safe, scalable, digitally-enabled access to rehabilitation for renal patients, increasing reach and patient convenience

  • Targeted prevention opportunities for Core20PLUS5 and other minority groups
